MP3 vs MP4: Which Format Should You Choose?
When you convert a video, the first question is always: MP3 or MP4? It sounds simple, but the two formats do very different jobs. Here's the short version: MP3 is audio only, MP4 is video plus audio. If you only want the song, pick MP3. If you want to watch the video offline, pick MP4. Everything else — quality, file size, compatibility — follows from that one difference.

When to choose MP3
- You want the music or audio only — a song, podcast, speech or lecture.
- You want to save space — MP3 files are much smaller than MP4.
- You want to play it in a music app, car stereo or smart speaker.
With MyDeskMate Tools you can extract MP3 audio at up to 320 kbps — the highest MP3 quality, nearly identical to the original. See our guide: YouTube to MP3 at 320 kbps.
When to choose MP4
- You want to watch the video offline — tutorials, lectures, movies, travel clips.
- You want to share the full video with someone.
- You're saving it for a TV, projector or big monitor where picture matters.
MyDeskMate Tools delivers true 720p and 1080p MP4 files (H.264) that play on any device. Learn more: How to download YouTube videos in 1080p MP4.
Does MP4 sound worse than MP3?
No. Both are containers/codecs that can hold excellent audio. An MP4 usually keeps the original audio track, while an MP3 re-encodes it — at 320 kbps the difference is inaudible to almost everyone. If audio is your priority, 320 kbps MP3 is the sweet spot; if you want video too, MP4 keeps the audio perfectly fine alongside it.
